This was the first news I saw when I awoke this morning, The real worry is that the iron frame may have been buckled by the heat.
There is an appeal for funds to help save the ship on the You are not allowed to view links.

Cutty Sark Website.

It strikes me, that as a collective of Maritime re-enactors, we ort to try to organise some kind of fund raising event either later this year, or early next year......
   .....Ideas Anybody?

As a side issue to this tragedy, the only other surviving vessel of tis type, The City of Adelaide, which is in a severe state of disrepair, is about to face distruction, You are not allowed to view links.

Obtaining money for damaged ships should be quite easy this summer, as it's in the publics eye with the 3rd potc movie!

I offer my bands services for some fund raising activity during the year, we are capable of playing totally acoustically..
So some kind of Live action on the quay could be an idea? - if we do it somewhere high profile the media are bound to be intrested? (or do i have them all wrong?)

I'm sure some kind of fundraising event could be organised. The question would pirates or Victorian?

Actually, if all the fee-earning groups in the UKPB simply chucked in a small percentage of their fees for this year we could probably make a fairly sizeable donation.

There are some very laudable comments here from members in the light of the recent tragedy, though I daresay more about the actual cause of the conflagration will be forthcoming in days to come ...

May I suggest here that it don't much matter what is actually Done in this respect as long as it goes towards raising Money.

Those members here who are regularly contacted / notified re the restoration of Tall Ships and similar works through various charitable societies or Trusts in the UK will perhaps already be aware that 'Income through Advertising' are the most important considerations in fund-raising : a concerted planned effort will increase the people reached - but whatever the amount, any financial contribution of any size sent through individual or group efforts to raise it is generally very gratefully recieved by the trusts or the people concerned as it all adds up - and I have found in the past they do remember you for it.

It's not so much what a vessel actually consists of as what it represents - an example here might be  Mary Rose compared to HMS Victory. In reference to The City of Adelaide, those members who are able to remember the state of HMS Warrior pre-restoration compared with it's current status will appreciate what a difference Money can make - though this appears to be greatly influenced by geographical location (in the instance of Adelaide, available finance and visitor / tourist figures in NE England compared to the same figures in London and SE England). The vessel has survived three sinkings and is currently Grade A listed - the re-siting and restoration estimate of £6 million for Adelaide is a drop in the ocean (pardon the pun) when compared to projects like The Millenium Dome, rebuilding Wembley Stadium and the staging of The Olympic Games.

CALLING ALL PIRATES THE WORLD OVER
As You KnowThe famous tea clipper the Cutty Sark was burnt out by person or persons unknown Captain Jack Vincent and I are looking for all the help we can get from all pirates all over the world to help get her back ship shape,it is going to cost millions of pounds but any help would be gratefully accepted.
Don't let this ship die an ignominious death at the hands of some low life scumbag who thinks he is being clever, Answer this post with ideas on how we can raise the vast amounts that are going to be needed, maybe it will be down to putting on shows or just asking as many people to dig deep into there pockets.
THIS SHIP MUST BE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE.
Don't let her down. c/o Captain Jack Vincent.Contact Jack At You are not allowed to view links.

Here's a start for ye both, mateys : I pledge (after deducting my direct expenses which I deem equitable) me plunder from The Truth About Pirates lectures and similar piratically-based incomes this year - and pending car-space and remembering to take it along I'll auction a rum-barrel for this worthy cause at Morwellham Quay.

Please note in respect of this (as you both obviously know me) that I wish to remain as 'Anonymous' as possible.

Couple of thoughts:

Firstly, if folks are going to make pledges like Israel (well done Spry for getting the ball rolling), would it be a good gesture to put all that money into a central fund and then make a donation on behalf of the UKPB? That way individuals could remain more or less anonymous, while helping to promote our hobby at the same time.

Secondly, although the Cutty Sark is of great historical significance let us not forget that there are other ships desperately in need of financial help for their restoration and preservation - ships which are no less important historically, but are less likely to receive much public help due to being overshadowed by the others. The aforementioned City of Adelaide for example, and participants of the first SWPF will doubtless remember the fun we had on the Pilgrim of Brixham*, currently sat idle in a ship-yard waiting for fund to restore her.

*For those who weren't there, Pilgrim is an 1895 ketch rigged sailing trawler - the second oldest of her kind in the world, and one of only about 7 surviving. Vessels of her type were pioneered by Brixham fisherman (she's a "Brixham trawler"), but used all over the world. Pilgrim is the oldest of those actually built in Brixham. She needs about half a million or so to get her sailing again, and I bet if we helped there'd be a couple of weekends' sailing in it for us.

If we are goinf to have an auction, we may as well do it properly.
I raided the attic and found this nice little mini Blunderbuss, brass barrel, working metal parts, only 20 inches long.

I will bring this along to add to the auction.

Any further items for the planned Sunday Night Auction may be lodged with 'Pirate Spry' in The Sheppey Pirates Camp at Morwellham Quay for due process.

If you ain't going to the event but wish to bid, cellphone bids will be accepted at the time - BUT - don't all try and use the same cellphone number (mine can be made available if anyone can't get a friend who will be there to bid for them and of course, don't send bids to this facility)

I have a highly qualified Financial Accountant offering me advice re fund-holding if that's any use re the above suggestion ? (from shipmate Foxe)

I saw that on the news Sad
I hope they can get the money together to restore it.

I would like to help, but sadly I'm so skint I can barely pay for my own bills and food these days.
But if my financial situation improves I'll make a fancy frock coat to auction off and have the proceedings go for the Cutty Shark repair fund!

Who's managing that fund btw?

Due to recent Government legislation, in my attempting to open a bank account for UKPB since May (four letters and four replies ago) means it is now only possible if at least six UKPB members send me their personal details (address, DOB, telephone number, 'nationality') to use in writing in a covering letter as verification that the UK Pirate Brotherhood isn't "a profit-making organisation or involved in money-laundering".

When you've finished laughing, I bring the subject up as I can always pay the auction-money held here direct into The Cutty Sark Fund - but - (read back a few messages) the subject matter of fund-raising also concerned raising money for other worthy causes - and there is also the matter of any cheque made out to UKPB for example from Lulworth Castle next year for pay and expenses in having no bank account to pay such a cheque into ...

Any such personal details sent here by 'volunteers' (there are only four 'Lords' at present so two others would be required, preferably group 'leaders' who already have the necessary communications to deal with any matters arising) will obviously be treated with the utmost confidence here & there is another option - but I will leave this matter for the time being for the other UKPB 'Lords' to think about and express an opinion.

Please don't put any personal details on this forum

'Acting Quartermaster' .... PirateSpry

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update : Since I've recieved only two replies to the above notice (one Lord and one member were willing to send their details) which including me makes three 'volunteers', no Bank Account is able to be opened so unless anyone proposes an alternative suggestion in the near future, the money will go to The Cutty Sark.

Has anything been done about this yet?
The auction at the SWPF raised almost a hundred pounds, and several people have promised donations in this thread.
Whilst I am all in favor of a UK Pirate Brotherhood Charitable fund being set up, it looks as if the logistics of doing this could be a problem.

I would suggest a final collection be made from all those who have made pledges, and anyone else who wishes to help. And that the final total be donated directly to the Cutty Sark in the name of the UK Pirate Brotherhood.
